A violent Marxist urban guerrilla movement called Tupamaros, launched in the late 1960s, led the president of Uruguay to give up control of the government to the military in 1973. By the end of the year, the rebels had been crushed, but the army has continued to expand his control over the government. Civil government was not restored until 1985.
